Southland dairy company Fortuna Group is backing an exciting new project aimed at solving the region’s bale wrap problem.
Chief executive Matthew Richards aims to help raise $200,000 towards a new pelletising machine that Southland Disability Enterprises (SDE) plans to import from China at a cost of about $1.2 million.
The pelletiser would turn bale wrap, which is made from low-density polyethylene, into pellets which would then be used to produce heavy duty industrial plastics such as alkathene pipes.
Richards said bale wrap was a huge problem on farms as it could not be buried or burned, because of environmental reasons, and the only option was to store it.
